Carrick is in the crofting township of Bun a’ Mhuillin on the north coast of Eriskay. The island is connected to its larger neighbour – South Uist – by a causeway (not tidal!) 1.5 miles long.

Similar but shorter causeways connect all the islands from Eriskay in the south to Berneray in the north. There are shorter inter-island ferries linking Eriskay with Barra to the south, and Berneray with the island of Harris and Lewis to the north.

Carrick is about 4 miles from Lochboisdale, which is the port for the Caledonian MacBrayne (Calmac) vehicle ferries serving the mainland ports of Mallaig and Oban.  From late March to late October, there are daily return sailings to Mallaig : see the Calmac summer timetable. From late October to late March, the daily return sailings are to Mallaig or Oban : see the Calmac winter timetable.

The Calmac ferry from Uig (Isle of Skye), sails daily (at least twice) to Lochmaddy in North Uist – about 45 miles north of Carrick (allow at least 90mins driving time) : see the Calmac summer timetable or winter timetable.

Causeways connect all the islands from Eriskay in the south to Berneray in the north. There are also inter-island vehicle ferries linking Eriskay with Barra and Berneray with Harris : timetables for these are also to be found on the Timetables for the inter-island ferries – across the Sound of Barra and the Sound of Harris – are also to be found on the Calmac website.

Once you have made your booking, we highly recommend installing to your smartphone the Calmac app, available from the relevant app store. We also recommend that you use the travel disruption update text message service.

Benbecula Airport at Balivanich, with Flybe/Loganair flights via Glasgow, is 36 miles north of Carrick. In Barra, Flybe/Loganair flights from Glasgow land on the beach (the world’s only scheduled flights to do so), with bus or taxi and Calmac ferry connections to Eriskay. If there’s just one or two of you and you are content to travel light and book early, travelling by plane can work out much cheaper than travelling by car and ferry, especially if overnight accommodation would have been necessary.

Demand for ferries and flights on Saturdays (and to a lesser extent Fridays and Sundays) exceeds capacity from late spring to early autumn, and occasionally at other times – such as half-term holidays and the Christmas / New Year holidays. We recommend that you buy your tickets as soon as possible. If your holiday with us is some months away yet, there may not yet be a timetable published for that period.
